2009 is a momentous year for art in the East Midlands as it sees the completion of the £130 million arts venue investmentprogramme, which will transform our arts opportunities in the region. The final of five brand new arts venues will open its doors in 2009 – completing a major investment programme in these and other arts buildings in the region. This represents one of the biggest investments of its kind in any English region. In 2008 four of the new venues opened – New Art Exchange, Nottingham; QUAD, Derby; First Movement’s Level Centre, Rowsley, Derbyshire; and Curve in Leicester. In 2009 Nottingham Contemporary is due to open its doors. The five bring outstanding architecture and a range of facilities. Other buildings or renovation projects we have funded are The Peepul Centre, Leicester; The Royal & Derngate, Northampton; and Broadway Media Centre, Nottingham. We have also contributed to other partners’ schemes in The Hub, Sleaford and The Collection, Lincoln. Laura Dyer, Executive Director, Arts Council England, East Midlands, comments: ‘This is one of the most exciting periods for the arts in the region, providing world-class facilities which, together with the region’s existing attractions and strong cultural scene, will put us fi rmly on the cultural and tourism map of England. ‘We wanted to celebrate this success in a unique and special way and commissioned internationally recognised photo-digital artist John Goto to produce Dance to the Muzik of Time. Here you will see the 12 outstanding and amazing images which John has created featuring professional dancers from our region in iconic regional locations, which already attract great numbers of visitors.’

| 2012 Games - our vision | |
We believe the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games offer an unprecedented opportunity to reinforce the UK’s reputation as a world leader in culture. The four year cultural festival leading up to the Games will represent the very best of British talent, celebrating imagination and creativity, innovation and excellence. This has the potential to inspire individuals and communities to take part in the arts, raising the aspirations of young people for years to come and leaving a legacy of increased participation in the arts. | Forming the future
During 2006-8 Arts Council England undertook work to identify strategic development issues facing the contemporary craft sector, in order to inform our future work at national level. This work has resulted in three major contemporary craft initiatives that span England and reach out to international craft practice.

| Building inclusion: Physical access guidance for the arts | |
| Physical access to buildings is often the first aspect that people think of when considering the needs of disabled people. When planning a new build or refurbishment of an existing building, you will need to consider all areas of the building. This means areas used by performers and staff as well as those that are publicly accessible. | |

| Diversity in Publishing Programme Evaluation | |
| In March 2004, The Bookseller published In Full Colour, a special report highlighting the under-representation of Black and minority ethnic communities in the publishing industry. In December that year, Arts Council England, London launched Diversity in Publishing, a positive action traineeship programme in association with the publishing industry. This report is an independent evaluation of that programme by BOP Consulting. Downloads: PDF format [616kb] Word format [555kb] | |
