Grants for the arts eligibility criteria

There is a high demand for our grants and we cannot fund all the eligible applications we receive. To manage the increased demand and make sure we distribute funds evenly, applications received after 20 May 2008 must meet the following criteria.

  • For national activities, we will enforce more rigorously current guidance that sets a ceiling of £200,000.
  • For grants to organisations we will enforce more rigorously current guidance that sets a ceiling of £100,000.
  • For all grants, the minimum application is £1,000.

We strongly recommend that you get advice from us if these criteria affect your activity. You can contact us via the enquiry form, and find further contact details on the contact us page.

Grants are available to organisations including:

  • arts organisations
  • local authorities and other public organisations
  • partnerships
  • regional and national organisations
  • organisations whose normal activity is not arts-related, including voluntary and community groups
  • groups of organisations (one will need to take the lead and have the main responsibility for managing the application and any grant)

By 'organisation' we mean a single group of people working towards a shared or common goal. This can take many forms (for example, a limited company, a charity or an unincorporated group). If you are applying to Grants for the arts as an organisation, you should have a bank account with two people who can sign in the organisation's name.

Grants to organisations range from £1,000 up to £100,000, and can cover activities lasting up to three years. The average grant to organisations in 2006/07 was £24,696. In special circumstances we can assess applications for grants over £100,000 for more major projects. We do not give grants under £1,000.

An application to Grants for the arts must include a number of items to be eligible to be assessed, including a written proposal and a filled-in application form. The How to apply booklet has full details about what makes an eligible application. You can download the How to apply booklet or get them as part of the application pack through our enquiries team.
